More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I was formerly a tutor in a bilingual preschool classroom, teaching children early literacy and language skills. I am fully trained to teach introductory reading skills, such as learning letters, recognizing sight words, and using pictures to understand storylines, emotions, and the consequences of actions. As a classroom tutor, I was also a positive influence for children's social and emotional development.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Some of my favorite activities include visiting local parks, baking, reading, painting, crafting, cooking, and playing make-believe. I also am very familiar with family-friendly activities in the DC area, and love introducing children to new experiences that encourage their creativity and sense of adventure.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite part of being a nanny is playing with children to help them grow. I truly enjoy designing day trips and activities that capture their interest and encourage them to try new things.
My experience with special needs children...
I'm friendly in my personal life with children who have down syndrome and are on the autism spectrum. However, I do not have professional training to care for children with serious special needs.
The most important part about being a nanny...
After spending an afternoon at Brookside Gardens' butterfly exhibit, a 3.5-year-old girl and I stopped at a nearby grocery store to buy snacks. I didn't realize that it was a Korean grocery store, and it was filled with cute cartoon-branded snacks, un-cut fish, and live shellfish! The little girl was fascinated by everything, especially a crate of live, snapping crabs! I held her in one arm and tongs in the other, picking up item after item of full-bodied seafood for her to look at. It was amazing how curious and unafraid she was, and I felt proud that I was able to show her something new and help her learn in a fun way.

Hi, my name is Akel Harrington. I have basically 18 years worth of childcare experience due to me having four siblings on my mother side and four siblings on my father side and being the oldest on both sides I had to grow up helping my mother and my father with my siblings which also helped me gain the natural skill of helping out with children, which led to me doing three years of paid babysitting/childcare. I am also good with kids with special needs because I also have one sibling on my mother side who has autism and another one of my dad side who has autism.
