I worked at AM/PM Child Care in Mohnton, PA. in the late 80s.
I had raised my little sister and looked after lots of kids over the previous years, but working with a large group of kids like that was an extra-special treat for me.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Play all kinds of learning games in any environment. I love to play music with kids and hear the kids make up stories and songs and plays. The imagination of a child is a beautiful, weird, and wonderful place. I think that kids are a tremendous resource for keeping us young and always thinking.
The most important part about being a nanny...
That the time you spend with a child has a positive impact on the child.
That they are safe, of course, but that they're not afraid and they're encouraged to explore the world in which they live and use their imaginations.
That you give the child the kind of care that a parent would if they had the time.

My experience with special needs children...
I looked after a young boy in Florida who had severe developmental issues. He was prone to temper tantrums and often injured others, including myself. I grew to love him, though, and when he was sent away to a special school, I was heartbroken. It was hard to learn him and his ways, but it was so worth it!
I also looked after a precious little girl on a life support system, and her loss was too much for me. I couldn't work with any children for several months following her funeral.
Special needs kids are beautiful, but it's so hard to let go of them.

The most important part about being a nanny...
I looked after Lilliana, Cody, and Faith in Florida. Every time I picked them up, I'd play the only station that came in- a Latin station. They got into the car the first day, and after aeveryone was safely strapped in, I yelled "Musica!" and we listened to that music all the way to my house. From that day forward, whenever we were getting into the car, all of us would yell, "Musica!' and dance around the car. We laughed and sang and it made those kids' lives less impossible. And, as a bonus, it made me so happy to see them happy.
We also had fashion shows at their house every morning for the girls. We laughed so much, and I believe I made a positive impact on their lives.
Went to visit them a few years after I moved away and I was greeted with hugs and kisses and tons of art they'd been saving for me- one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.
