To me, it’s making sure a child feels safe, loved, and understood. Every child has their own personality and way of communicating, and I think it’s important to take the time to learn those little things about them. I want the kids I care for to feel comfortable being themselves and know that they’re cared for.
My experience with special needs children...
I have experience caring for my nephew who was nonverbal and autistic. I really loved getting to know his little quirks, stims, and the different ways he communicated. He would pull my hand toward what he wanted, and even without words, you always knew when he was showing love. Caring for him taught me that communication can look different for every child and that patience, understanding, and paying attention really does a lot.
