I began working with children as a mother's helper, and slowly transitioned into a dependable babysitter, then took on some nanny roles as well caring for children for up to a week at a time while parents were away. While in college, I also worked as a part time assistant preschool teacher. In this role, I spent a lot of time working one-on-one with one child with autism.
My experience with special needs children...
I've spent a lot of time working with children with autism. I started by volunteering through sports and clubs, then became a camp counselor at a sleep away camp for children with special needs. I eventually ended up working one-on-one with a preschooler with autism, helping him navigate the social experiences of preschool and work on skills necessary for going on to kindergarten. I was an assistant preschool teacher at this time, but fell into the role of working with this child, as well as another child with ADHD because I found ways to communicate and connect with them in a peaceful and understanding way.
