A little bit about me

My name is Makenna, I grew up in Covington, Washington! I love to be outside, spend time with friends and family and absolutely love doing anything creative! My favorite hobbies are hiking, pottery, painting, and more all of which I love to do with the kids I work with.

I have a background in education, with a BA in History and Minor in Sociology, with the goal of teaching high school! I am going back to school this June for my Master’s in Teaching at UPS in Tacoma. My most recent job was working as a lead teacher at a Montessori school. Here, I worked on creating my own lesson plans based on our curriculum which were then used to teach the preschoolers and give them a structure to their day, better preparing them for school! Other than that, I have years of nanny experience with a variety of age groups and range of the number of kids I had at one time. I also am STARS certified, have my CPR certification, and food handler’s permit, if that is a concern!

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love to do any type of art, especially that which allows kids to have the most creative freedom! This includes food art, marble art, and more! I like to emphasize learning through art as well, having kids learn about a topic and then create their own art based on it. For example, learning about weather and then making a mobile, representing all different kinds of weather for the younger kids. When it is rainy, I love to get kids active by doing yoga or dance parties (sometimes utilizing youtube for help with a guidance dance). Finding activities off the screen is important on these indoor days. On sunny days, any free play activities as well as nature walks, nature scavenger hunts and chalk obstacle course are some of my favorites. When able to drive kids around, I love the zoo, parks, children’s museums, spending time at the local libraries events and more!

My experience with special needs children...

I have experience working with children who are on the autism spectrum as well as working with kids who have down syndrome.
