A little bit about me

Hi, I'm Maura :) I'm an outgoing, adventurous, and responsible 22-year-old Canadian woman. I love the outdoors, film photography, music, animals, cooking and trying new cuisines, reading, thrift shopping, and travelling. I have 10+ years experience working with children - from casual babysitting, to live-in nannying for a family on an island in Muskoka, Canada. My caretaking experience is unique in that I have 10+ years of providing piano lessons to children. I've studied music my whole life and am passionate about sharing my talent with children. Further, I have tons of experience working with vulnerable individuals - from non-verbal children with autism, to unhoused teenagers who struggle with issues ranging from trauma to substance abuse. As a graduate with my Bachelor's in psychology, I am sensitive to the needs of individuals who face a multitude of mental health issues. I currently reside in Ottawa but am looking for an opportunity to work anywhere in the world!

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have babysat for countless families with children ranging from ages 1m to 16 years old. I have provided music/piano lessons to children as young as 3 years old. As a live-in nanny for an entire summer on a remote island, I cared for a young child while her parents worked full-time. This consisted of preparing meals, keeping the house clean, doing laundry, and ensuring her safety in all activities, including water activities (e.g., boating, swimming, fishing). As an autism respite worker, I have spent years providing social communication therapy to two siblings with severe autism. This was under the close supervision of a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP). Since I have worked with an SLP for many years, I am familiar with the methods used to assist children who struggle with speed impediments and/or delayed speech. My caretaking abilities are unique in that I can also provide music lessons, an approach that sensitive to developmental disabilities, and casual speech therapy.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Arts and crafts, music lessons, swimming, boating, camping, museum trips, cooking and baking, reading and writing, scavenger hunts, fort-building, science experiments, gardening. The list goes on!

The most important part about being a nanny...

Connecting on a personal level to the child. Realizing that they are their own, beautifully unique, individuals, who should be treated with the same respect and dignity as an adult. I am a big believer in giving a child the freedom to choose what activities they want to do (within reason)! I think that children learn best when they are immersed in their own interests. I am here to support these interests and guide them towards being the best version of themself!

My experience with special needs children...

I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents with special needs. I spent 2+ years as an autism respite worker for 2 autistic siblings that required substantial support. As a youth counsellor at a local homeless shelter for children and young adults, I have become acquainted with the implications of a number of mental health disorders, and importantly, how to effectively communicate with these vulnerable individuals. As a psychology student, I volunteered in two separate projects investigating depressive symptoms in autistic children. This consisted of me spending lots of time with them and their parents, doing surveys and questionnaires. My lab experience significantly informed the way that I communicate with, approach, and utilize inclusive language with those on the spectrum.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I have plenty of special memories from my many caretaking involvements with children. One of my favourites was the two-week-long backyard "camp" that I organized during COVID-19. Given the daycare and community center restrictions at the time, I recognized the need for working parents to find reliable childcare. I came up with the idea to run a "camp" in my backyard. I recruited 10+ children from my neighbourhood and set up different activities each day - ranging from swimming lessons in my pool, to obstacle courses, and scavenger hunts all over the neighbourhood. I set up a system where each child could suggest a fun activity of their choice and I would incorporate it into our 2-week camp itinerary. At the end of the week, I made personalized scrapbooks for each child so that they could remember their very unconventional COVID-19 backyard summer camp! I received fantastic feedback from children and parents. I went on to run this "camp" again the following summer. Each child came back!
