I have volunteered at a special needs orphanage for twelve months in high school. I am an elder sibling to two, nurturing and caring comes quite naturally to me.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

As a nanny, I love engaging children in activities that foster creativity and learning. Indoors, arts and crafts are a favorite, allowing kids to express their imagination through drawing, painting, or DIY projects. Storytime is another go-to activity, encouraging a love for books while improving language skills. I also enjoy playing board games and puzzles, which teach problem-solving, teamwork, and patience, all while being fun and interactive.

Outdoors, I focus on activities that get children moving and exploring. Nature walks are a great way to connect with the environment, sparking curiosity as we explore parks and observe wildlife. For more active play, I love organizing simple games like soccer or frisbee, or taking trips to the playground where children can interact with others and stay physically active. Creative activities like sidewalk chalk art or scavenger hunts also combine fun with learning, keeping children engaged in a healthy, enjoyable way.

The most important thing about being a nanny is creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment for children to grow and thrive. A nanny plays a key role in a child’s development, both emotionally and intellectually, so building trust, showing compassion, and providing consistent care are essential. It’s also important to be adaptable, as each child has unique needs, and maintaining open communication with parents ensures the best possible care. Ultimately, the goal is to foster a sense of security and well-being in the child, helping them feel loved and confident as they learn and explore.

My experience with special needs children...

Volunteering at a special needs orphanage for 12 months was an incredibly rewarding experience. I worked with children facing various physical and developmental challenges, which taught me the importance of patience and adaptability. My role involved helping with daily tasks such as feeding and dressing the children.
I learnt how to communicate with each child in ways that suited their unique needs.
This experience gave me a deep appreciation for the importance of creating a nurturing, inclusive environment. It also strengthened my ability to handle difficult situations calmly and with empathy. Overall, my time at the orphanage taught me the true value of care and connection.
