A little bit about me

Hi,
I’m Nichole. My first “real” job was in a daycare for disadvantaged children and children who had been evicted from the other childcare programs in our small town. I was an Assistant Teacher for all ages when I started. I really connected with the children who were having a difficult time.

Before that I was a Nanny for a 7 week old boy and his 2 year old sister for 1 summer. I also babysat a 6 year old with Autism regularly.

I grew up helping to raise my younger siblings, one of whom has Angelmens Syndrome and is mostly deaf. Because of that word got around town that I had a talent for working with children who faced challenges. And I babysat many of them. Including a boy with Frigile X and his sister.

As an adult I’ve moved onto many career paths helping those who face difficult situations and challenges in their lives. And I spent many years working with animals who had been neglected or otherwise mistreated.

I worked for Ventures in Sitka Alaska
In high school I trained as an EMT and Nursing Assistant through a college program
I have cared for many children ages 7 weeks through 14 years and Adults when my Grandparents needed assistance and I cared for them in their home for 8 months.
I’ve cared for children who face challenges like Autism, Fragile X, and Angelmens Syndrome

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I love reading with children, and helping them learn letters and numbers as we read.
I love making art projects so they can have something to hang up and be proud of and it teaches them to be creative.
I love to bake with children and help them to measure out the ingredients and scoop the dough
Taking walks in the park to explore nature and identify different plants and animals even insects is so much fun
Going to the beach and playing in the sand and splashing in the waves.
Riding bikes around the neighborhood so they can be familiar with their surroundings with someone they are safe with makes sure they won’t get lost so easily if something were ever to happen
Making up games and telling stories uses our imagination and creative thinking.
Making chores into a fun activity instead of a dull task engages children and teaches them to like responsibility.

The most important part about being a nanny...

To remember that you are there to help that family as a whole. Your job isn’t just to tend to the children. But to assist the parent(s) as they need. Learn the flow of the home and adapt. It’s up to the Nanny to help improve their lives quality of life all around. To never adopt a parental role themselves, but foster a different relationship with the children. To enhance their lives and help the household run smoothly.

My own Sister Shian has Angelmens Syndrome I helped care for her off and on her entire life. She is now 26

I’ve also cared for a 6 year old with advanced Autism. Back then they had a different way of looking at the spectrum.

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite moment actually has to be when Ciera the 2 year old I cared for had a cold and so did her then 10 week old brother Tyler. Tyler’s diaper wouldn’t stop leaking all over every time I turned around. It was a mess! He was crying and I couldn’t get his fever down. He would spit out the baby Tylenol. Refused a bottle. Poor thing was just miserable! Ciera came into the room with her blankey pulled halfway over head and wanted some applause. Then got so concerned about her baby brother that she started to cry. So I calmly explained that he would be alright as soon as he got some medicine and then he would feel better. So she walked over, kissed his screaming face, and he stopped crying. He smiled at her. I took the opportunity to put the liquid Tylenol in his mouth, and it went right down. Cieras loving kiss saved the day!
