The most important part of being a nanny is the trust you build with the parents you work for. These parents are entrusting their kid's health and safety to you, and by keeping open and honest communication, you are showing them that they can trust you to make those things your number 1 priority. I also highly value the bond and relationship I build with the children I work with. Not only is it important that I make the parents feel comfortable, but I want to also ensure that the children I’m working with see me as someone they can confide in and be themselves around. The most important part about being a nanny...
During COVID, and even some after, I worked for a family with a boy who loves basketball, a sport I have both played and coached. At first, it was difficult to look for safe things for families and kids to do. Because we couldn’t go out anywhere, we had to be creative and come up with as many in-home activities as possible without them becoming too predictable or possibly boring. While the boys sister wasn’t the biggest basketball fan, and we made sure to do as many activities that involved everyone as possible, he and I spend time every day after he finished schoolwork honing his various basketball skills. It was something that made me feel incredibly fulfilled, because not only was I doing something I enjoyed, but I was helping a kid find that same joy. To this day, anytime I watch him and his sister, he wants to play and work on basketball with me, and he even asked his mom for me to take him to see the Harlem Globetrotters! It is moments like these that nannying is all about.
