Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Pretend play is cool because of how children want us to engage in a world of their making. Adding in science or skill building into play is exciting because kids will feel empowered to gain more skills and education. I also enjoy crafts, they're fun, great for motor skills, and allow the kids to express themselves. I ask kids to teach me an activity they enjoy. They usually feel more comfortable when I learn their way of doing things. It also validates their interests as important.

My experience with special needs children...

I have experience working with students who have special education needs in an inclusive classroom. I have enjoyed being friends with people who have disabilities throughout my life. I approach adults and kids with disabilities as I do anyone else. I ask about them as an individual and what I can do for them as an individual. Communication is key to working with any kid but it is a main focus when engaging with a child with a disability. I have volunteered at A Night to Shine. My major has also prepared me to handle minor healthcare needs. My experiences have led me to focus on the person as a whole, rather than just a diagnosis.

The most important part about being a nanny...

When I taught poetry in schools, I had a 4th grade student who had a learning disability. It effected their ability to spell and they hated poetry because of this. I encouraged them to draw "comic poems". They loved to draw and they eventually added words, with help, to their comics. The last class we had they gave me a card. The student told me the poem inside was the only one they wrote. It was so moving to know that meeting a kid where they are at, works. They grew as a poet and didn't feel shame when writing. Allowing them the space to choose what to write and how ended up with a beautiful, unprompted poem.
