It would be patience, for a child a stranger can be found scary and suspicious, you would need to be approachable and let the child come towards you. A positive attitude is very important as well, you also need to be very alert of both the child and your surroundings for the safety of both.

My favorite moment would be the time I had taken care of a relatives child and this child had not opened his trust towards me however gradually in a short amount of time by the time I had to leave upon the parent's arrival he had started balling his eyes out wanting me to stay the night. I remember feeling very touched and happy that he had trusted me very much!
