Hello! My name is Serra. I'm a registered Behavioral therapist, with private Nanny experience, and a passion for facilitating learning, communication, empathy, emotional intelligence and self regulation for children and families. I have experience supporting children with special needs, and I take special interest in expanding language skills. Watching a child use a skill, a word, or identifying and regulating a hard emotion that I introduced, or modeled, and practiced with them is the best feeling in the world. These skills and communication, that I model and practice with them, that will continue to have a lasting, positive impact in their lives. That's my purpose on this earth.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have always been a caretaker, from little siblings, to Sunday school children, summer campers, girl scouts, and tutoring fellow students, to professionally nanny work and then finding my passion in my field of Behavioral therapy.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Teaching language skills, from vocabulary to phonics. Music, arts and crafts from a process based learning model, instead of a product derived model; thus fostering a deeper connection to self expression, without the limiting factor of the pressure to make the art look good, or be perfect.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The most important part of working with children is making constant conscious effort to be a good role model. Children soak up everything around them, not just the words people say but they also absorb how others handle their emotions. Being a role model for children means being emotionally intelligent and self regulating not just speech, but taking physical actions to ground yourself and show children how to handle difficult emotions.

My experience with special needs children...

I am a Registered Behavioral therapist, with 2 years experience working with Behavioral analysts in a clinical setting, to foster communication and decrease self injurious or extreme behaviors in children with ASD. I have experience modeling language skills, emotional identification, self regulation skills and building communication skills between families.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I was RBT with a 4yo with nonverbal boy with ASD. He was fantastic with gestures, but had lots of trouble with speech. I started sign language modeling with him and he generalized the knowledge so quickly that the same week he was signing to his mother when he was hungry, hurt, or wanted a hug. I modeled Spanish language skills with an 18 month old, when he said his first word in Spanish to his mom she hugged me, and cried tears of joy, because he was going to be able to talk with his grandfather who only spoke Spanish. These small behaviors, just modeling them, with the children opens their minds to understanding the world around them and exploring how to interact with that world.
