Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I worked as a Camp Counselor in Raleigh, NC. The location is called Greystone Recreational Center. It’s an inclusive location and there’s multiple camps with an age range of 4-12 year olds. At this camp we did learning activities, food experiments, fun games and many more.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

When working as a summer youth camp counselor, I would say my favorite thing to do was the food experiments. As a kid when I experienced summer camps that wasn’t something I got to do. I thought it was so cool to teach the kids how to make sweet treats or just meals from scratch. Seeing the excitement in their eyes and just the experience as a whole.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I think what matters most about being a nanny is how you bond with a child. I always want to create a safe space for kids to open up and feel safe. Working with different kids teaches you so many new things. Their minds are still developing and they’re still learning right from wrong. Kids will teach you patience and understanding on a whole different level.

My experience with special needs children...

At my summer youth camp, I’ve worked with nonverbal autistic children. In the beginning it wasn’t easy. One thing I learned is that trust has to be built overtime. I stayed consistent with him, didn’t pressure him into doing anything he didn’t want to do, slowly progressed into doing activities with him.
He then became familiar with me. He started to trust me. He wanted to me to participate in activities with him. If he needed to use the restroom he’d come get me and point or say “potty” every now and then.
He had minor issues with keeping his hands to himself. I redirected him and let him know that it wasn’t okay.
When he’d get overstimulated around the other campers, I removed him from the environment and we found other things to do or found fidget toys.
