More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I am a current Nanny for 3 children and I have been babysitting on and off since I was 16 years old. Even throughout my full-time career in social work and while raising my 2 sons, I still helped friends with their children.
Another experience that sets me apart from many and had such an incredible impact in my life, as well as my boys, is my involvement in a shared living program.
Because of my experience in social work, I grew close to several individuals with intellectual disabilities. I formed a special attachment with one gal in particular who had Down’s Syndrome. She had very limited family involvement so I began taking her to my home on the weekends and holidays. Long story short, when my oldest son was three months old, the young woman became a permanent member of our family and lived with us 24/7. She remained with me for 23 years until she passed. Norma made me a better person and I learned from her.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Playing board games, reading to them and listening to them read, getting down on their level on playing with the toys, coloring, going for walks in the neighborhood, taking them on outside activities, sports, going to playgrounds, going to parks with our supplies and doing litter pick up, and using silly voices with the kids to make them laugh. (I’m sometimes like a Mrs Doubtfire, lol).
The most important part about being a nanny...
Everything that I have mentioned above already. It’s the connection with the kids and the family. Yes, it’s a job, but I’m doing something that I love. I want to build strong life long connections and someday dance at the kid’s weddings. I want longevity with a family.
My experience with special needs children...
I have over 30 years experience with adults and kids with special needs as this was my previous full time career. Throughout the years, I worked my way up from a part-time direct care worker to the Director of Residential Services. The agency I worked for had a range of 25-30 group homes in our county for folks with IDD and physical disabilities to live as independently as possible.
For the first 5 years of my career I was in direct care and did all hands on work. I cooked, cleaned, transported folks anywhere they needed to go, assisted with all aspects of hygiene, helped feed if necessary , gave medications and have experience with tube feedings and seizure management.

The most important part about being a nanny...
After a couple of weeks with the kids when they start really bonding with me and most importantly trusting me. When the kids hug me goodbye and can’t wait to see me the next day or miss me after the weekend. I love walking in the house and they come running to me, saying my name and giving me a huge hug. These moments are awesome!!
Like I mentioned above, the trust is critical. When the kids begin to trust that they are safe with me when we are out, that means the world to me. I will always keep any child in my care safe from strangers, dangerous situations or bullies on the playground.
Finally, for me, another good Nanny experience is the overall appreciation I receive on a daily basis from the family. Knowing that I make their life easier, they are happy with the job I do and they trust me makes for a positive work life. They are a wonderful family!
