More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I have been a teacher for 9 years, with the majority of my classroom experience being in early education. I am a
classroom teacher by trade, but have been caring for children and families in several capacities for over 13 years. I began babysitting starting at the age of 15, and to this day families reach out
to me for care. I had a short-term nannying position for an essential worker family when everyone, including my center, was shut down for COVID. Additionally, I have had regular
evening-care roles with families that include driving home and preparing meals. I have been a one-on-one tutor for children from Kindergarten up through high school for several years. My resume gives greater details about these roles, and I am happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I looooove a sensory activity. I am absolutely not afraid to make a mess (and clean it up, of course!) for the sake of joy and learning. As a teacher, parents were constantly thanking me for "shouldering the burden" of doing the messy activities at school so that their kids could have that enrichment. I have been writing weekly/monthly curriculum for 6 years in my classrooms. My degree coupled with my experience as Program Supervisor has given me the foundation for changing a project/activity to be appropriate for different ages and stages. In my class, I would update my sensory bin with new things about once a month, so I have a ton of ideas for that as well. I am so happy to mix up our days with field trips and playdates as well.
The most important part about being a nanny...
A nanny's role in the family is supporter, however they may need. It's hard to be a working professional with a family, and it's hard to maintain a home when you're a working professional. A nanny is there to help fill in the holes. That work primarily happens with the children, as they are the most important priority to all parties. A nanny's role is to partner with a family and make sure that they are providing the care, love, and enrichment that the parents are envisioning. Depending on the family's needs, this may also include varying levels of home maintenance as well. As long as the family is clear about what they need support with, a nanny's role is to provide the support that is asked for.
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked with several special needs kids over the years , including working in the Experimental Education Unit at UW that blend general and special eduvation preschool/Kindergarteners. I've worked with kids that have been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Downs syndrome, and kids learning disabilities that have a variety of differing IEPs. I love working with children that have special needs and have a myriad of tools and strategies to support and care for them.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I had a child that was extremely verbal and had incredibly big feelings. She had no problem explaining why she was upset about things, but she was struggling a lot to regulate herself when she was feeling sad or angry. I worked with her all year on techniques to slow her breathing and calm down. It started out with co-regulation, where we would breathe together and I would help her know what to focus on. After a while, she would come to me when she was upset and suggest the ways she wanted to regulate together. I distinctly remember when we crossed over from co-regulation to just regulation: I had walked over to her and before I could even get a word out, she said: "Thea, I'm just really upset right now and I think I need to take a minute to calm down in my cubby before I can wash my hands". Then, I watched her walk over, sit in her cubby, and count her breaths with her fingers. In just a couple minutes she was totally fine and ready to move on with the day.
