The opportunity to change lives, and to have my life changed. Being entrusted with the most precious part of someone's heart. That's huge. I will never take that lightly. It's always an opportunity to learn new things, no matter how long I have been doing this. Every child and every family is different.
My experience with special needs children...
In high school, my gym teacher chose me to work with a 1st grader who had a degenerative disease that caused dwarfism, blindness, and eventually, she needed to be in a wheelchair. He had me teach swimming to her for a couple years. It was fantastic! When I graduated from high school, I wrote her a poem in Braille. The school had a Braille typewriter. Katie passed away in her early adulthood, but that teacher and I still reminisce about those days.

The most important part about being a nanny...
The 3-yr-old I was caring for kept using the word, "hate," and his parents were trying to get him to use different words. His mom would tell him that it's a very strong word, and give him alternatives. So, taking her lead, when he used, "hate," while riding in my car, I said, "D, hate is a really strong word--"
"--I know, I know!" he said without missing a beat. "And I get stronger and stronger every time I say it!"
