A little bit about me

Hi! I'm Maddy, a 21 yea old college student at SUNY Morrisville for Environmental Science. I have extensive experience in childcare as well as teaching. I've taught ages 3 months- adult but am most familiar with the 1-8 age range. I'm CPR certified, play piano, guitar, drums, bass, and I'm vocally trained. I worked at a music day camp during the summers pre covid, after which I spent a year as a swim instructor in NYC before moving to a preschool in Brooklyn and then to Morrisville for college. I also know basic mandarin.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

Pre Covid I worked at a music day camp (Park Slope Music School) where we taught piano, drums, bass-guitar, and guitar. Ages were 6-14 years, mostly 8-12.

I spent a year as a swim instructor at Swimjim in NYC teaching water safety, the four basic strokes, and swimming. Ages 3 months- adult, most students were 4-12 years old.

I've worked at La Petite Colline as a floater teacher helping with the 1 and below year room, 2-3 year olds, and 4 year olds. I spent most of my time with the 1 year olds and 4 year olds.

In highschool volunteered at Gallop NYC helping at their child specific location in prospect park where they use horse back riding lessons for physical and cognitive behavioral therapy. This was mostly ages 6-12 years.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I'm a huge outdoor person, I go camping, hiking, ice skating, swimming, and more on my own time. With children, depending on the age range and guardian preferences, it's always fun taking them to the beach, park, or museums. As far as indoor activities I've done a lot of arts and crafts, I usually read to them, usually with a focus on animals

The most important part about being a nanny...

My goal as an educator/someone who works in childcare is to build confidence and communication skills. I maintain a focus on identifying and expressing emotions verbally, and identifying the most realistic and situationally appropriate solution. I believe in order for children to learn, they must first understand. I make an effort to explain why we do things, and why we sometimes can't get or do the things we want to. No matter how many times it may take, I make an effort to include children in the thought process that dictates how we act and what is expected of us. By building a foundation of trust, encouraging curiosity and conversation my goal is to create an environment in which the children feel comfortable coming to adults when they're unsure or need help, and think critically and compassionately when going into the adult world.

My experience with special needs children...

I've cared for children on the spectrum, with sensory overload, learning disabilities, allergens, physical disabilities, hard of hearing children, and children with limited speech.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I honestly have a lot of these, one of my favorites would be when I was working as a swimming instructor. I had a student with severe separation anxiety. The first three lessons had a lot of crying, screaming, and general chaos. It being a group lesson, any time I put the student down he'd start bawling again and every time I'd pick him up again I'd spend the first 20-30 seconds of the exercise calming him back down. I remember the first time I had him he cried almost the entire time save a few giggles mid lap when I'd say or do something he'd find funny. He didn't talk much, and it was three lessons before he started replying to my questions. I'd ask him what his favorite color, animal, etc was to get his mind off the stress. The fourth week we finally got to a point where he got in the pool on his own, already smiling. After weeks of screaming and crying it was so rewarding to see him excited and comfortable in the water.
