The most important part about being a nanny...
I think it is extremely important to be an outlet for the kids. Whether they need to talk or run around to get their energy out, I will be there to listen or run with them. Treating the kids with the same respect you expect from them is also important. Kids aren't just kids, they are people to and their feelings matter. If they don't feel respected by you, you won't feel respected by them. What I've notice while working at a school is that some teachers treat fear and respect as the same thing. Fear and respect are completely different. A kid should never be afraid of their mentor.
My experience with special needs children...
My sister has high functioning autism, so I know how to help her. I haven't worked with special needs directly, but I have had a training specific to the special needs kids at the school I work at. I am also around them everyday and I know all of them by name.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I was a babysitter for a family who unfortunately lost their mom. It was hard to watch them go through that, but I was there to help them and give them to support they needed. It has been 5 years since then, and now they are all happy and healthy, building friendships at school. My favorite thing has been watching them become themselves again while dealing with the trauma. I am and will forever be extremely proud of them.
