One of my favorite nanny moments was seeing a 5-year-old I cared for use a calming technique we had practiced together. When children feel frustrated, I like to hold their hands and take a few deep breaths with them before talking about what happened.
One day at the park, he became upset when a younger child started playing with his Batman toy. After I explained that the little one was too young to understand, he came over to me and said, “Let’s breathe together!”
It was such a special moment because he recognized his own frustration and independently chose to use a strategy we had practiced. It reminded me how rewarding it is to help children develop healthy ways to understand and manage their emotions.
