I had been hired to help a family that had a toddler with special needs and a new baby. Mom just needed an extra set of hands helping while she was on leave, and then I cared for the kiddos while she went back part time. For the first few months, the toddler wanted NOTHING to do with me. I would walk in, he would look at me and say “no.” He just wanted his mama and did not want to share with his new baby brother. One day, they asked if I could help at the mall to get pictures with Santa. When we got there it was packed!!! I tend to not enjoy crowds too much, so I was a bit overwhelmed with the pure chaos. Apparently, the toddler felt the same way, he approached me, held his arms up, and said “up, up” we FINALLY clicked. He knew I understood how overwhelming all of the people were and must have sensed I would give him the quiet support he needed. From that day on he was my little buddy!
