Summer L. - Seeking Work in Woodstock

I spent two years working as a pre-school teacher’s assistant. I had volunteered for a year at a Academy which led to a paid position as a teacher’s assistant. I taught the lesson plans the teacher prepared as well as nurturing and caring for all ages from newborn to pre-K. I loved watching my little “buddies” graduate from the infant room to the One’s, the Two’s and so on. I assisted all the teachers in various classes, and was very well appreciated. I also spent one year volunteering at xx Preschool. That was a great experience but I really prefer working for a family. I found that I really enjoy the emotional rewards of being a trusted extended member of a family, kind of like a favorite Auntie. I like the bonding you get in a family that you can’t get in a school setting. For the past four years, I was a nanny for one family, and in June 2011 I became a “shared” nanny for two families which provided me a full time income. One family has two autistic children who I would take to therapy and work with them on their special needs at home too. Those kids really have opened up since I started to care for them. Unfortunately they just moved to Alabama in December. The other family’s son who I cared for these past four years is now in elementary school and the mom has cut back to part time work, so they don’t need me as much as I would like to work. I am looking for that special family who will regard me as an extension of their parental love and child rearing while they are away. I want to bring my own childhood experiences to another family who sees the benefits that I had as a child growing up with a nanny. I am on time, respectful, trustworthy, loving, patient, and flexible. I am there whenever I am needed, day, night and weekends. I keep the house picked up, do the dishes, and do things that will make it easier for the parents when they come home. I change diapers, make the kids’ meals and bottle feed. I am CPR/first aid certified and I know how to use an Epi pen. I also have a current certified background check.

I had the pleasure of working with a family for two years prior to the family I'm currently working for now. I'm very sad to leave, who I consider now my family, but the kids are growing up and I'm not needed as much anymore. I've been with the xx for over three and a half years and I take care of two wonderful children. I'm also xx schools monitor for the after school Spanish program. I've had the privilege to work for such a wonderful family of tasks that include: laundry, cooking, cleaning, homework, indoor/outdoor activities, arts and crafts, carpool, play dates, after school activities, baths, reading, and tucking the little ones in at night.

I am also trustworthy, mature, nurturing, dependable, honest and punctual. I am also certified in CPR and first aid. I currently work at a Montessori school in their infant room. I have anywhere from one to five babies by myself everyday. My duties include following each child's individual feeding and sleeping schedule along with hourly diaper changes. I also am in charge of cleaning and sanitizing my rooms toys, sheets, bouncy seats, cribs, swings and changing table everyday. I also have babysat for a family that has two boys and one girl. I have nannied for three different families over the past 4 years. One family included a 2 and 4 year old, one family was an 9 and 6 year old and one was two 12 year olds and one 13 year old. I have babysat for countless families since I was 13 years old and could babysit in the neighborhood. I still babysit all the time for children of all ages. I have worked in the Watermarke Church daycare a couple of times, also. During my senior year of high school I had my first period helping special needs children in the coffee shop, during their PE class once a week, and in the classroom to teach them basic skills. This is also something I did after school. I have plenty of experience with children of all ages and all different personality types!

I began working for xx at the age of 17, after years of babysitting for neighbors and family members. After a few years of heading a 4 year old class, I was asked to nanny for one of the children in my group. From that point on I was placed with 2 other families using reputable agencies in Atlanta. I was with the last family that I worked with from 2004 until I graduated from nursing school in December of 2014. My husband and I are in a transition with our location and I am looking to do some part-time nanny or babysitting until we sell our home and set down roots in the Atlanta area, where we intend on staying.

What are some common responsibilities for nannies in Woodstock, NY?

As a parent, it’s natural for you to ask your nanny for a little extra help around the house. However, the boundaries for a nannies duties vary from person to person. In general, a nanny is responsible for making sure your children’s needs are met. This includes things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active, that they have a healthy diet and a sanitary home. When tasks go beyond child care, for example scrubbing kitchen counters, folding laundry, gathering groceries, or teaching a language, you will likely need to provide additional compensation.

To start, it’s important you set expectations and are aligned on compensation from day one. This includes outlining vacation days, a protocol for sick days, and everything else you would want your own employer to cover. From here, spend time getting to know them. Take your nanny out one of Woodstock’s great restaurants, learn about their childhood, and discuss your parenting philosophy. Finally, be sure to resolve conflicts as they arise. Open communication is crucial to ensuring a healthy long-term relationship.
