The majority of my childcare experience was while volunteering at my church as a small group assistant leader. In that setting it was common to have between 7-11 children under the care of two adults. At this time I worked with multiple age groups, including 1-2 years, and 7-10 years. My responsibilities included cleaning, snack distribution, conduction actives, and supervising free-play.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I can usually go along with whatever the child in question wants to do. If need be I can be high energy and run around the yard playing pirates, or calmer for arts and crafts. I thrive when I know the child under my care is enjoying themselves, and that takes many different forms.
My experience with special needs children...
My experience with special needs children is not professional, but personal. Me and both my siblings are neurodivergent in some way, but my older sister has probably had the most obstacles to overcome in that aspect. I grew up both watching and experiencing first-hand what ASD and ADHD looked like from the outside and in, how a lot of it looks like overreacting when to the child it can feel very isolating. As I got older, I also started to struggle with ARFID and Selective Mutism, and navigating that without a lot of support meant I tried a lot of different things to learn how to function the way I was expected to.
I have personal experience in the different ways neurodivergence can be misunderstood and a struggling child may be punished for how their brain works. And in my own journey I've learned a lot of tools to help bridge the gap of communication.
