To me I believe it is very important to listen and tend to the child's needs. The MOST important is to keep them alive but that should very rarely be a problem. I mean in the even of extremities of course.
My experience with special needs children...
I used to volunteer for The Arc of Midland and would communicate with many different adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. As well as having a young boy (4 at the time) who most likely has autism live with me and my family. My younger brother also has ADHD and I have had to learn to adapt to his behaviors as well.
