My experience with special needs children...
My cousin has Cerebral Palsy and muscular dystrophy. He is 14 non verbal. We have grown up together I play with him feed him change him and tell him jokes to make him laugh. Dylan understands everything we say and he's unbelievably smart. The only difference I see between him and I is that I talk and he doesn't. I also have two younger siblings that are autistic. My little brother has difficulties talking he's smart goofy and loves bugs dinosaurs and Legos. My youngest sister is autistic she can talk but she has no emotional control and has extreme noise sensitivity. She has severe meltdowns. I spent years reading and learning everything I could to better understand both of them. I know several techniques to help calm them when they are overstimulated. I also babysit for a family that has 2 young kids with autism. James has minimal verbal skills and has repetitive speech. Emily won't talk but will point and grunt to explain what she wants and needs.
