The 2yr old girl I had been nannying since she was 3 & 1/2mo old, looked at me with fear and panic in her eyes as she slipped slightly on a step on the staircase in her home. Then her eyes darted to our hands, clasped tightly together (with her other hand holding the railing). She looked up and with a big sigh of relief, shoulders completely relaxed, and said “Bev’s here, I’m safe.” I had been telling her from the moment I met her, as an infant, that no matter what- as long as I (Bev) was there, she would always be safe. I needed to hold back the tears threatening to escape as we descended down the final 4 steps.
