One of my proudest nanny moments didn’t look big from the outside — but it changed everything for one little boy.
He was four when I started watching him. Smart. Sensitive. Big feelings. And every single morning when his Mom would drop him off, it was a full meltdown. Tears, clinging, “Don’t leave me!” — the kind that makes your heart ache.
Instead of just “powering through” it, I decided we were going to build bravery like a muscle.
We created a tiny routine:
A special handshake we invented together.
A “brave button” (literally a small, smooth stone we found on a walk that he kept in his pocket).
A mantra we practiced was: “I can feel nervous and still be brave.”
For weeks, we practiced naming feelings instead of fighting them. We read books about courage. We role-played drop-off at home with stuffed animals. I never rushed him, but I also never let him avoid it.
Then one morning, he squeezed my hand, did our handshake, then took a deep breath, and said:
“I’m going to be brave today.”
