My experience with special needs children...
My Brother was special child with hard time growing. He still does. He can't process things very quickly as when a fight always break out. He breakdown and my first instinct was to calm the fight down or remove him from the area to calm him.
My sister has Bipolar with multiple Split personally. I have always had keep her happy and calm. Make it seem everything was okay.
Our mother sadly wasn't the mother of my brother n sister so I took care of them.

One the boys I was nanny for simply gotten up, looked at the blue sky and simply said my grandpa is smiling at me.
