Helping young people grow. To pour into them and make a real difference by teaching them skills that will last their entire lives. Giving them room to come into their own personhood and giving them tools to express themselves and feel not only seen, but heard. Giving them joy through interactive experiences and going on adventures, big or small.
My experience with special needs children...
Using AAC device and basic ASL to communicate. Diapering, bathing and special feeding, including pureeing foods and preparing meals according to special dietary needs. Aggression management and de-escalation strategies. Cognitive adaptation and using that knowledge to grow children where they are at cognitively, emotionally and physically. Success in academics, including teaching 200+ ASL signs for advancement of communication, and in physical coordination and development. Giving fulfilling experiences in all areas of life. Issuing medicines. Aiding during and assisting with serial casting and in daily AFO use. Support through illness, including high fever, vomiting and diarrhea. Positioning in and out of vehicles with specialized equipment or car seat. Transportation to and from various therapy appointments and involvement when required. Assistance to family with child at medical appoints.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Seeing the look on a child's face when they know you can understand them and knowing you played an active role in giving them the tools to be truly heard and acknowledged. There is no better feeling! Helping someone to be able to communicate is truly transforming. Not only for them, but for everyone else in their orbit.
