I would say the most important part about caring for children that aren’t your own is knowing you are playing a role in how they develop as a human being. Being aware of that is the most important thing.

While I have little direct experience, I have been through multiple hands on job shadows where we work with special needs children. Such as children with autism of all levels and cerebral palsy.
