Swimming at the local pool, arts and crafts. Making up stories, reading stories. Cooking, teaching them basic life skills. Finding out what their hobbies are and letting them teach me.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Being consistent and kind. Truly listening and making a connection. A nanny should be someone the parents can trust, and that the child feels comfortable and secure with. And getting to help a child grow and learn is an amazing thing. It shouldn't just be about homework, bed, dinner, bath. Those things are important, as is having an established routine. But just as important is forming a connection, letting the kids know they are special and helping them to express themselves.
My experience with special needs children...
My granddaughter was on a feeding tube until age 3. She is labeled "medical mystery" but has signs of autism. She is hard of hearing, and was nonverbal until this past year, but she still only speaks a few words. We use some sign language, and I've helped her with her physical therapy, feeding therapy, and occupational therapy (with directions from the therapist). She is 5 and still in diapers, but can work a cell phone. I understand every child is unique and develops at their own pace. It's up to us to find the best way to help them and to communicate.
