I have raised 3 children of my own 2 boys and one girl. They are 23, 21, and 20 I have always played a pivotal role in most of my nieces and nephews lives. I still 0lay a very active role in my children's lives even though my boys have both moved out of state.

I think the most important part is knowing that all children are different and you have to build rapports with them just as well as any adult. Being stern but compassionate is a good mentality to keep. They are children still learning and experiencing new emotions and thoughts it is our job to help guide those things in the right direction.
