A little bit about me

I’m a former Montessori Assistant Teacher (school did their own CJIS background check) who spent the majority of employment working with toddlers-18 months-3 years old) but also worked with 3-6 years old. First Aid & CPR certified, fully vaccinated including all COVID boosters & annual flu shots, and certified in Early Childhood Education. I have excellent references, clean driving and criminal background history. I worked in healthcare prior to changing careers to childcare and prior to that worked as a professional paratransit driver for the state of Maryland. I have wonderful references from the Montessori school including my former boss, dedicated Head Teacher & several sets of parents who are happy to answer directly any questions any prospective employer may have about my performance. I enjoy working with toddlers and preschoolers and am trained to observe, track and record their developmental milestones. I can work with parents to customize a curriculum specific to their child.

More About Me

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Nature walks with small containers to take home things to look at (leaves, twigs, fallen flower blossoms, etc) with a magnifying glass or child’s microscope. In the past I’ve spoken with toddlers and preschoolers at length about nature, the life cycle of butterflies, photosynthesis (with toddlers you compare it with how we eat food and drink water but plants use sunlight and water to grow-also a good time to remind them they get bigger when they eat their fruits and veggies. I also love seeing their faces light up when we do STEM activities like showing them reactions between acids and bases like lemon juice or vinegar and baking soda with Q & A before and after. Light reflection and refraction was a learning activity I introduced at the Montessori school which the toddlers LOVED. And the teachers were surprised no one had thought of this before but I have to be honest, stumbled onto this by observing how distracted our class got by reflection and quickly capitalized on the moment.

My experience with special needs children...

There were a small percentage of autistic children in the Montessori school I worked in recently-varied in terms of how much assistance they needed. Some had clinicians visit school weekly. As I worked most often with toddlers (18 months-3 years old) we had some children who displayed symptoms of autism (stimming, limited vocabulary, etc.) but had not yet been diagnosed. The ability to be flexible and modify activities for these children accordingly was essential. Note: A boy named Jack (probably ASD 2), from the preschooler floor who, for some reason decided he liked me. He would always find me on the playground, touch my back and sometimes do pebbling with me. I always thanked him, commented on the texture of the object, then he would either walk away or kneel quietly near me. I cannot say I have extensive experience working with autistic children but absolutely would love and care for them as I would with any child-customized to his or her needs, preferences and medical history.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Impossible to truly narrow down to 1 favorite however 1 which had an unexpected and profound impact on me happened during Teacher Appreciation Week last year. I had only been working at the Montessori for 3 months so I didn’t have any expectations in terms of what I might receive from parents. I received many greeting cards but one in particular made me immediately sit down-literally-as Inside the card, the mother of a toddler named Poppy had handwritten a note which began with, “Ms. Jennifer loves me.” Her mother went on to write that her daughter said this to her and her husband recently after they had brought her home from school. She said she couldn’t fully express how much this meant to both of them to know their daughter wasn’t just being supervised at school but cared for in a genuinely loving manner. It really hit me that after barely 3 months Poppy decided to declare this happily to her parents even though I wasn’t present when she said it to them. I welled up with tears!
