The most important part about being a nanny...
Treating children with respect. Being the adult and care-giver in the room while also treating them as an equal (in a person-to-person way), and show them that you care what they have to say, how they feel, their comfortability, implementing their ideas into activities, and engaging with them.
Being intuitive with them while also asking questions.

My experience with special needs children...
I have experience babysitting high-functioning autistic kids. I've babysat 3 times for one family and grew up watching my sister who has high-functioning autism.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I was babysitting 3 kids who (on their own) wanted to make their parents a full bouquet of roses made of paper and pipe cleaners. It was a truly heart-warming moment.

Part-Time Child Care Provider Available in Portland, OR: Laura L.
I’m a part-time nanny as well as a mom to a toddler. I like to keep things lighthearted when I work with kids. I’ll often offer to play a silly song so that little ones can dance and get their energy out in a positive way. I also offer both hugs and space, both talking time and cool down time, depending on what kids seem to be communicating that they need in the moment. I typically try to speak to young children without too much “baby talk,” so that they can grow their vocabulary and become competent communicators.
My approach to childcare is informed in part by the ~3 years that I worked in daycare settings. In those environments, I learned a lot about child safety and typical child development. In nannying settings, I’m able to adapt that knowledge to the needs of the specific home that I’m working in.
