A little bit about me

Hi, I’m Karen and I just moved to Connecticut last week, bringing with me many years of experience as a nanny and as a preschool teacher. I find working with children to be a joy because they never cease to amuse and amaze me. Also, my understanding of early childhood education and child development have been very helpful to me in my work with children since understanding is where I get most of my patience. I also believe in being a life long learner so I continue to educate myself through classes, trainings, literature, coworkers and the parents I work for.
To every encounter with children I bring enthusiasm and my undivided attention which is probably what makes children love me so much. I follow the children’s lead, especially when it comes to their interests, while still setting appropriate boundaries. I am an active nanny and like to keep myself and children active as well so it is important the family I work for allow freedom to explore parks, museums, libraries, toy stores, hiking trails, farms etc. I am also busy with activities especially art, nature, science and cooking.
I believe in positive discipline and do not want to work for a family who spanks or yells a lot. In addition to being great with your child/children, I offer light housekeeping and love ALL pets. I am also comfortable with preparing meals and running errands if needed.
My availability is wide open. I am looking for either, two part time jobs, or one full time position. I am also interested in nanny share. Unfortunately, due to back problems I am not looking for work in infant care.

The most important part about being a nanny...

It is important to know what values a family holds and then to reinforce their values while I work/play with their children, that is why it is also important that the match between family and their nanny be a good one. For example, I need to work for a family who values positive disciple and does not use corporal punishment as a way to discipline their children for it goes against my values. In addition, it is important that a nanny meets the needs of not only the children but makes life run more smoothly for the whole family.

My experience with special needs children...

I worked as a one-on-one learning assistant for the County of Sonoma in California. I was part of a team of professionals working with individual preschoolers whom were diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. I attended my students preschools with them as an aide and worked with them in their homes to help them meet educational and developmental goals.

The most important part about being a nanny...

There are too many to say one moment as a nanny is my favorite so I will pick “one” of my favorite moments. There is one memory in particular of a 10-month-old baby girl I was bathing who picked up the wash cloth and scrubbed the bottom of her foot. It was very endearing to see her care for herself in such a detailed manner. It was really cute!
