My experience with special needs children...
One of my favorite children, Joey, is in my after school program and he is autistic. We had trouble helping Joey in our program at first, but I put in countless hours learning about the spectrum and how I could help Joey. I watched videos from parents, videos from professionals, and Ted talks. It is unbelievable to see the change in Joey now that I properly know how to help, assist, and encourage him. I don’t know everything, but I put in work to help understand my children the best that I can. Every child deserves educated caretakers.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I spent the day with the children teaching them about animals, we had a bunch of fake plastic aminals all over the house in their animal kingdom groups. We were watching various animal sounds, and nat geo documentary movies on YouTube and the kids were in animal heaven! They began to draw their favorite animals as I played music for them. One of the songs I played was from The Lion King and the sound of an elephant played softly in the back and the two year old looked at me and screamed, “ELEPHANTTT” with the biggest smile across his face. I then had to play the song 15 more times and each time he heard the elephant noise he would just scream and run around the house! Too cute!
