A little bit about me

Hi, my name is Kayla! I’m a Nebraska native but have lived in SC for three years now. I’m currently pursuing my Bachelors in Communication Sciences and Disorders at GSU-Armstrong with hopes of becoming a Speech Therapist. I’m a Marine Corps and Law Enforcement veteran, with nannying, caregiving, housekeeping, and special needs experience having worked as a preschool assistant teacher and in-home behavioral therapist, as well. I love coming up with creative and educational activities that are individually geared toward each child’s interests, getting outside to get fresh air, sun, and move around, and I’m a huge animal lover! If I sound like a good match for your family, I’d love to set up a meet and greet!

The most important part about being a nanny...

Building trust and security with the child(ren) and reassurance to the parents / primary caretaker that their child is safe and genuinely enjoys the company of their nanny! Children have this innate sense of character and I think they’re pretty honest, through both verbal and nonverbal communication, in how they feel about someone.

As a nanny my duties are to fulfill the care needs as instructed and give feedback that those needs were met as if the parent themselves were there looking after the child(ren). Continuous communication and having clear expectations is key; I believe the more detail the better, it is not up to me as the nanny to decide what I think is important to share until the parent(s) let’s me know otherwise. And who says you can’t have fun and be safe at the same time! :)

My experience with special needs children...

I have worked with older children with physical and developmental disabilities as an in-home caregiver as well as children ages 4-9 y/o with Autism Spectrum Disorder as an in-home behavioral therapist. I have experience assisting with activities of daily living (brushing teeth, hygiene, meal times) as well as more complex areas including, self/emotional regulation, prompting/reinforcement, social skills, affirmations/building confidence, sensory processing.

The most important part about being a nanny...

On my off time I was grocery shopping and I thought I was imagining hearing a little voice say “it’s Ms. Kayla! Ms. Kayla!”, and turned around to see one of my kiddos (who I referred to as my little Buddy) smiling and tugging on his mom. It just made me glow as we stopped and chatted that he was so excited to see me in the store after having spent the entire afternoon with me, that was reassurance that he genuinely appreciated our time together as did I! I think that was also a reaffirming moment for the parents that their son was in good hands while they are at work, too!
