I worked as a pre-K teacher for 2 years after college, then as both a lead infant & toddler teacher full time in a daycare before becoming a nanny, sleep consultant & newborn care specialist which I have been doing for over 10 years.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I love going for quick walks outside to get fresh air for babies & toddlers still in a stroller, or just letting kids run around outside, teaching sign language, music, reading, participating in pretend play, sensory activities, coloring, crafts, tummy time & mirror time with smaller babies, & keeping toddlers busy & engaged with fun foods & I try to engage in the specific activities children show interest in & love trying new things with children as well. I love baby wearing infants & have many of my own carriers, teaching older kids to swim, & going to the park with children of any age if parents are comfortable. I also am comfortable staying home with babies or children & can always find a way to engage them in developmentally appropriate activities. I also love caring for newborns day or night & helping parents navigate the newborn stage to make it as easy as possible for parents, finding what will help each individual family the most.
The most important part about being a nanny...
Working as a nanny and newborn care specialist for over 10 years, I understand how difficult it can be for parents to trust someone new with their child. Safety & strong communication are both essential for me as a nanny. I understand how important trust & confidence in your nanny is for families, & I do everything I can to help build that confidence & trust as a caregiver. I believe flexibility is extremely important as a nanny, & understanding & respecting a families wishes around the care of their children is so important. My best skill is being an effective communicator & working with families as a team to make sure families are happy with their children’s care when they cannot be there. A nanny should be able to confidently & independently care for any child, & also be able to navigate helping work from home or stay at home parents, knowing the best way to assist them in any situation.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I have so many favorite moments as a nanny, it’s hard to choose just 1! I think one of my favorite moments though, is when the youngest child of a family I was with for 5 years who i cared for the youngest since birth was SO close to taking their first steps. One day before Mom left for work she told me he had been so close to walking the night before & she hoped he wouldn’t take his first steps while she was gone. All day I saw him about to take steps, & each time I picked him up before he could so it could happen with mom. When mom came home from work that day, she walked towards him & when she was close, I put the baby down and he took his first steps right into his mom’s arms. I was so lucky to witness it, & so happy mom got to see it too. I will never forget the tears of happiness streaming down her face watching her last baby walking. It will forever be a core memory for me as a nanny, with a family that became family to me too.
