Becoming someone that they feel they can confide in. Being a mentor when they need it but also there to hold their hand when they cry or listen when they need to get something off of their chest. Kids need to be respected the same way adults are and when they realize they’re being heard, I’ve found they’re much more inclined to understand or listen when they need to.

My youngest cousin Kevin has a severe mental disability and needed intense care. It took several weeks but when he finally understood the game tic-tac-toe, his eyes lit up with excitement and it was all he could play for months it seemed. No matter how tired I was of the game, he was always ready to impress me with his new ideas of how to beat me and that shine in a kids eyes never gets old.

Saturdays I clip coupons and wash bedding and shampoo carpets once a month. Monday through Friday we do school for 4 hours and then we make art and candles in the afternoons, eat dinner, take baths and get in bed by 8pm.
