A little bit about me

I adore caring for children and have experience and education doing so. My life’s calling has always been caring for newborns/infants. I have been a nanny/house manager, for the past 4 years since I moved to Georgia. Presently I care for 2 month old twins and a 4 month old and absolutely love it. Previously I created/owned a Licensed Daycare in Pennsylvania. Cared for six children ages 2 mos. to 6 years of age. Also cared for school age children before and after school. Provided a loving, caring clean environment. Loved them as if they were my own. Created all daily curriculum. Prided in getting children ready for kindergarden and beyond. Took Early Education classes yearly and earned a CDA (Child Development Associate). Can provide many references. Would love to care for your children. Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
Mary Helen Salerno

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have been a nanny for wonderful families for the past 4 years and absolutely love it. Owned, created and operated a licensed home based daycare for 13 years. Cared for, guided and taught 6 full time children, as well as before and after school aged children. Enjoyed working with special needs children, including those with learning disabilities, behavioral issues, mental challenges and physical impairments. Created and implemented curriculum for children ages 6 and under. Have an understanding that play promotes curiosity, discovery, and problem-solving which helps develop a positive self-image. Observed children to get to know them individually and in a group. Observations and Assessments played a large role in planning curriculum. Curriculum was based according to children's needs and interests, individually and as a group, and with the preparation for kindergarden readiness in mind. Prided myself in developing a great rapport with families.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

Adore caring for infants and guiding them daily to reach their milestones. Enjoy spending one on one time with children which brings a closeness and helps children feel important, cared for and confident in themselves. Look for child's interests and try to expand upon with indoor and outdoor activity. Enjoy sharing the curriculum I created and watching children's psychological, emotional, behavioral, social, physical and educational skills grow. Enjoy watching and guiding children in dramatic play as their imagination emerges. Enjoy the creativity that children show when doing our daily crafts. Enjoy children's interest when reading to them and how they try to guess the next thing that will happen in the story. Mainly enjoy watching the joy they express in themselves when they are praised for their hard work and accomplishments.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I feel the most important part of being a caregiver is making sure a child feels important, cared for, loved and safe. I believe when a child feels trust and secure in their environment that anything is possible. Using eye contact and being down on the child's level is extremely helpful. Showing interest in what a child is interested in and finding activities to expand on that interest helps a child learn. Asking questions and giving children time to answer help children feel confident. Positive discipline, works the best. For example, when a child is feeling angry or frustrated, letting them express themselves without interruption, using words that express my understanding of what they are feeling. Asking if they need a hug, redirecting to a different activity or guiding them to take a break with a book or toy. I feel is the only way to discipline. Also, getting close to the children’s families and actually feeling like part of their families is something that I will cherish always.

My experience with special needs children...

Observed, assessed and identified children with a learning disability, mental challenge, emotional/behavioral issue, and physical impairment. Updated parents on findings, a goal was set to reach the next milestone. Updated parents on the work done with me and were given suggestions and activities to do at home to help child progress. Open report with families on any issue. Supplied families with contact information on outside agencies if needed. Strong feeling that all children and adults should be accepted for who they are, respected and embraced as competent human beings and should be able to be themselves, not a constructed version of themselves and not who others think they should be. Understand the importance of confidentiality. Personal experiences make me have strong feelings. Cared for my brother in law , who had Down Syndrome, for 12 years in my home. I was privileged to have the experience to care for and be loved by such and amazing human being who taught me so very much.

The most important part about being a nanny...

The love and appreciation I received and am still receiving, from old and new families and children in my care when moving from Pennsylvania to Georgia, will always stay with me. Having to close my daycare and move away from the children and families I grew to love has been very hard. Their expression of love and appreciation has been overwhelming. Their constant contact with me through calls and mail has helped a great deal. I always enjoyed watching how children's faces lit up when what you have taught them catches on. The expression of accomplishment is remarkable to see. Enjoyed all the stories the children would come out with and were often very comical. Love the innocence of a child. Appreciated the closeness families felt with me and vice versa. It was nice to know that families knew they could confide in me. Good feeling to have the trust from families to care for their child. Even enjoyed behavioral problems and the challenge to correct the problem.
