More About Me
Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...
I am a retired teacher with 34 years experience. I have worked with preschool age- high school age students. I am certified in the areas of Social Studies, special education and spent the last ten years working with students whose English was their second language. I have worked with students in home settings who were too ill or disabled to attend public school. As a teacher, I have worked with students who had individualized education plans, 504 plans, speech, and communication disorders. While a special education teacher, I specialized in students who had issues like ADHD, seizure disorders, autism, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety. I strive to help any child achieve their dreams and to be as healthy as possible. I have also volunteered with children in a church setting. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, and scrapbooking. I enjoy the NFL and college sports and like to golf and bowl. I am available for an interview if requested.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
Craft and art projects, cooking and baking, simple science experiments, field trips to local sights if appropriate. With older students, I would be willing to teach them to golf, bowl, sew, scrapbook, read, or start a collection of something they are interested in. I would take my cues from the child and parents and see what they are interested in or if there is something related to their interests, culture or history we could explore.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My husband and I don't have any grandchildren and moved to a 55+ community when we moved to Florida. One of the things I have missed the most is seeing kids! So, even though, as a teacher, I know how to provide structure, I wouldn't mind being a "grandmother" figure to some kids and doing some fun things like baking chocolate chip cookies, reading stories, or helping with school projects.
My experience with special needs children...
I have worked with students with developmental delays, speech articulation or communication disorders. I have worked with students who were visually, hearing, or physically impaired, some in wheelchairs. I have helped students with a variety of learning disabilities in reading, writing or math. I have also worked with students who have experienced trauma, depression, anxiety, and other disorders. I have had a lot of experience with students with ADHD, with or without distractibility. I have also worked with students who were diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or oppositional-defiant disorder. Having said that, no child is defined by their disability; it is just one part of them. Every child needs to be treated as an individual and with respect. I would work with the parents as a team regardless of whether the child has a special need or not.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite moment has been when a former student comes up to me in a store and tells me they learned a lot in my class or from me or when a former student gets in touch to tell me about their success.
