The most important part about being a nanny...
Being present; attending to a child's needs in the moment, whether it be their safety, physical needs, or social/emotional needs and working in alignment with their families' rhythms, priorities, and needs.
My experience with special needs children...
I've worked with infants and children with complex health issues: cared for an infant with fetal alcohol syndrome, preschool aged children with autism, have done residential work with teens and young adults with autism and diagnosed learning disabilities, and have also provided live-in care for young adults dealing with profound mental and emotional distress.
The most important part about being a nanny...
I nannied for a little girl, Aliyah, who lived on a dirt road in a semi rural area. One day she wanted to jump in the huge puddles in front of her house and so we went inside and put on her rain boots and I took the most amazing pictures of her jumping in the puddle over and over, she had a look of pure joy and excitement on her face. It's one of my favorite memories of being with her.
