My experience with special needs children...
I have an 11 year old brother who has Autism & ADHD, caring for him pretty much his whole life. To connect with him and other younger students I’ve worked with I’ve learned to meet them where they’re at, we’ll spend time watching videos/talking about topics of interest, playing with toys, etc. When big feelings or different experiences begin to overwhelm children I work on grounding exercises with them including breath work, exercises activating the prefrontal cortex, etc.
