More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I worked inside the Teaching Zoo and have quite a bit of experience engaging with the kids in ways that stirs curiosity and is fun for all ages.
Ive also worked a lot inside of BSA programs both as a fellow scout and as a staff member

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

When working with kids in the past, I make sure to bring with me different sensory items and fun things to do like fidgets, drawing supplies, books, and / or a couple safe instruments depending on age and other things.
For young kids, I like to find small learning opportunities within the games and other activities to help stir curiosity. I also like to mix outside time with inside time so that they have some outside play.

If they are allowed to have TV time, I try to find low sensory and educational shows / movies [ Little Bear, Bluey, Jack's Big Music Show, Blues Clues, Zobomafoo/wild kratts, etc]

And for bigger kids, I try to do similar things but in ways that are more fitting for both that age range and them as an individual.

The most important part about being a nanny...

Making the time you spend with them enjoyable and fun while also making sure they are safe and protected.

My experience with special needs children...

Ive worked with kids that have adhd / autism.
Being neurodivergent myself, I try to keep note of what exactly a child is saying about an experience to help gage how to approach the next step of whatever activity we're doing at the time. Depending on a few things, the child may not have the words to explain what exactly is bugging them, so I do my best to help walk them through it so that we can figure it out together and find out what they do like about it for next time. I try to do this with all children, but especially if they happen to be diagnosed with anything.

The most important part about being a nanny...

One of my past students would come up with crazy, but engaging stories on the spot. He did this for our lesson activiy on making ecosystems as well as just sporadically would run up to me and start telling me about something. Every time he did this, instead of brushing him off or something, I would listen and ask questions, no matter how ridiculous it sounded.

By the end of every week, the visiting troops are encouraged to bring down their favorite staff members and highlight the impact they made on both an individual and or the troop as a whole. The student ended up bringing me down, telling me how fun the week was before hugging me twice, crying because he didnt want to leave. He also gave me his troops bandana.
I will never forget that, as I realized in that moment just how much the week really meant to him and impacted him. If I wasnt before, I now strive to make similar impacts with every child I interact with, as i know how much it means to them from being that kid once too.
