I've worked in the Child Watch department at the Central YMCA for one year. It's been great experience with a wide age range of 0-12, and I've learned a lot from that job. It takes a balance between upholding responsibilities/authority and getting on the kids' level to keep them happy.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I do enjoy quiet activities such as coloring, crafts, or playing with toys, but more active play is just as fun and helps get kids' energy out— outdoor games, walks, pretend/dress up, etcetera. Its also wonderful to get them engaged in educational activities; balancing play with learning is always ideal.
The most important part about being a nanny...
A genuine investment in the wellbeing of each child, as well as keeping open communication/understanding with their guardians. Familiarizing yourself with the family's preferences, and showing consistent effort within those guidelines, is vital.
My experience with special needs children...
My little brother and another 5-year-old I once babysat are both on the autism spectrum, and their care required extra accommodations and consideration. Being on the spectrum myself, I have an understanding of neurodivergence in children and how to meet them where they're at. I'm less experienced with physically disabled children but I am willing and capable of learning.
