The most important part about being a nanny...
I worked with many traumatized kids through my childcare counselor experience. My favorite moment was with a young male with a sever anxiety disorder and PTSD from physical and sexual abuse. When he first came to the unit, he was very quiet and would not interact with his peers. However, he did feel more comfortable with me as I used a variety of tactics to build trust. Slowly but surely he would come out of his shell. When nightmares occurred or he was suffering from bad thoughts/anxiety, he would seek me out for comfort and as I was there supporting him I would tell him how brave he was, to breathe, and to remember that he can only control what he could control himself.
One of my last days on the unit, a new kid was assigned to us and was having a very hard time adjusting. The boy I had been working with for months, whom never interacted with his peers, went up to this kid and told him the same things I would say, control what you can control and everything will be alright.
