Additionally, I was a substitute teacher for Horry County and an instructional aide in a special needs classroom in California.
Activities I enjoy doing with children...
I try to find a balance between indoor and outdoor activities, weather permitting. I encourage imaginative play, and intentional play derived from play therapy observed through my daughter’s experience. Outdoor activities include, sidewalk chalk and paint, nature walks, and water play of all sorts!
The most important part about being a nanny...
I think it’s important to remember that I’m not JUST making meals, playing dolls or pretend; but cultivating little minds and creating memories for kiddos, or providing nutrients to little ones. For the parents, you are protecting and nurturing their most precious part of their lives. I know first hand, that leaving kids in the hands of others is a huge deal and requires the upmost trust in another person. It’s not simple work. It’s an important job. Most people can do it, but only a few can do it well.
My experience with special needs children...
My daughter is developmentally delayed and is non-speaking. Partially uses a communication device. Other experience includes aide work with autism, nonverbal, aggressive behaviors with autism, cerebral palsy, etc.
The most important part about being a nanny...
My favorite nanny moment was while I was working with a 13 year old boy with cerebral palsy. We connected almost immediately and every time I walked into his house, he would rush the door to give me a hug and say my name. His pure joy to just see me would start my day so bright! Even after I moved away, I would get texts from his mom telling me he won’t stop asking for me. He was a boy of few words so I knew our connection wasn’t one-sided.
Another one would be with my high school student I was an aide to. They were autistic, mostly nonverbal, and aggressive; but we had a strong connection. Every now and then, like on Christmas break, I would receive texts messages from his parents phone that were from the student himself. The texts often included pictures if the things he hyperfixated on or clear “talk to text” messages that included my name. Although he couldn’t always communicate it, it was clear he was thinking about his school aide , and that always made me smile!
