I have a few years of experience of volunteering at the library in my hometown and running activities for the kids there. Crafts, reading together, anywhere from playing with puppets and house to legos.

Activities vary based on the child's interests, as playtime is not a one size fits all model. If they want to read with me, great. Maybe we'll bake cookies one day or go to the park the next. And if none of this interesting? We'll have to think outside the box.
My experience with special needs children...
I have some experience caring for a young autistic child. I would help him through difficult mood shifts when things changed, or he got overstimulated, we would draw..a lot! When it was bath time, I figured out a way so so that his family could wash his hair, as they both previously really struggled with the task due to sensory concerns. I talked him down many times, from being in meltdown mode to feeling calm again. I would also help him with toileting.
