Although my first couple jobs were in retail, as most young adults living in my area, the first job that really interested me was at a daycare. During my two years at a School for Young Children I first worked with infants under the age of two, before moving to the three to four year old room. During my time here I was responsible for everything from lunchtime to implementing stimulating and educational activities to promote a learning environment. I had to write detailed incident reports and often had t interact with the families to ensure that their child was on the right track. Towards the end of high school I left the daycare to take care of a family of three for about 25 hours a week. I worked with them for two years. The eight year old and four year old had a variety of different diagnoses that can be discussed during an interview, and the six month old was rarely in my care. Instead of seeing this as a struggle, the family and I were able to view this as a learning opportunity. I saw an occupational therapist with both boys who took me under his lead. The past two summers I worked with another family of two boys ages five and ten, that saw the same occupational therapist (originally meeting this family at the daycare). This allowed me to expand my experience with children of a different caliber. Again these two children had a variety of diagnoses that can be discussed along with a detailed review of each experience during an interview. In working so closely with these families and the OT professional, I was able to learn how to effectively interact with all children while discovering new and stimulating activities to do throughout the day. In my care these children rarely watched television or used technology, but instead did activities outside, promoting natural stimulation, a sense of adventure, and use imagination. Additionally, over the past four years I have also completed over 600 hours of community service at a therapeutic horseback riding facility. Here, I shadowed a physical therapist and an occupational therapist, in addition to my regular duty of giving one-on-one assistance to a disabled rider. This rider was in my care from the time that they arrived at the facility up until their lesson ended. This facility also offers a summer camp option for riders near and far that I have participated in since I was of age too. My duties in this environment varied from one on one attention with individuals on and off the horse and creating and implementing lesson plans to structure the days. It was here that I found my calling and influenced my decision to pursue occupational therapy as my focus of study. As a high school, and now collegiate athlete, I was blessed with the opportunity as a sophomore in high school to join the unified soccer team, eventually being nominated to attend the national leadership conference for the Special Olympics. I valued the ongoing learning that took place and actively promoted personal growth within the mentees and myself. I always maintained an enthusiastic and positive attitude to ensure that my disabled teammates knew that I was there to have fun and I never wanted them to feel as if my volunteer work was a chore, as it was not. I was committed and supportive, understanding that the learning would take time. I exemplified a willingness to share my athletic knowledge and taught the mentees all that I could. This has not and will not change as I enter a new realm of childcare, full-time nanny.

Understand Babysitter Responsibilities in Madison, CT

Before beginning the search for a babysitter, it’s important to understand what you’re looking for and if a babysitter is the right choice for your child care needs. There are lots of benefits to hiring a babysitter such as getting the flexibility of having some more time for yourself or with your partner. When hiring a babysitter, first, you should explore the differences between a nanny and a babysitter. If you’re looking for occasional child care, babysitters are the right choice for you, but if you’re looking for more frequent care, a nanny may be better for your needs.

From there, you can think about what you expect your babysitter to handle so that you can create a profile for nannies to reach out to you. The boundaries for babysitters’ duties can vary from family to family. However, in general, a babysitter is responsible for making sure your kids’ needs are met, including things like ensuring they have opportunities to play and be active. When tasks go beyond child care, for example to housekeeping, laundry, or meal preparation, it’s good practice to communicate these expectations with your babysitter before hiring them. Along with the different duties that you ask for, experience and location in Madison can impact how much you pay your babysitter.

Madison Babysitter Interviews

Once you start connecting with prospective babysitters, the next step is to conduct an interview. To make things a bit easier, here’s a list of some babysitter interview questions to consider asking:

  • Do you have experience being a babysitter?
  • What sort of household tasks are you open and comfortable doing?
  • Do you have any references?
  • Are you trained in First Aid or CPR in Connecticut?
  • Do you have a Connecticut driver’s license? Do you own a car?
  • How do you handle tantrums? Can you share an experience disciplining children?

During the hiring process, it’s essential to ask for references and by asking their references questions you gain a better understanding of they will fit in your family. As you get closer to hiring a nanny, be sure to run a background check to ensure your kids are in good hands. When evaluating a babysitter that you’re considering hiring, make sure you’re setting the foundation for a good relationship with your babysitter. You can do this by being clear about your expectations around babysitter responsibilities and compensation, and of course, by being friendly and welcoming!

And of course, as you learn how to hire a babysitter, Nanny Lane's nanny services are here to help you along the way.
