A little bit about me

My name is Abiola Blair, a mother of three and a Pre-k assistant teacher for eight (8) years at Friends of Crown Height Day Care Center. I have had the chance to model and teach a diverse group of students including those challenged by autism, learning disabilities. Consequently, I have gained in depth knowledge of accommodating different styles of learners and incorporating effective methods to meet students' unique needs.
I encourage students' learning by incorporating an exciting and engaging atmosphere, also creative learning centers, various forms of technology, hands-on activities and fun manipulatives. These methods prove to stimulate students' social, emotional, physical and academic growth.

I earned my Associate degree in Early Childhood Education and Child Development Associate (CDA) certification from Medgar Evers College. I also received my NYSTCE: Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS)

The most important part about being a nanny...

Working with special needs students requires a strong sense of understanding and acceptance that everyone’s needs are different and that each person requires their own sort of attention. It’s a heartwarming victory to watch a special needs student learn something new and see a broad smile light up their face from self-esteem and confidence.

My experience with special needs children...

In 2014, I became a teacher at a friend of Crowns Height after school program 25 children were special needs. Many of the students had significant and severe disabilities. They rocked and banged their heads and made lots of repetitive noises. This was due to
anxiety. They all had delayed language, social and behavior difficulties. We use the barriers of inclusion, so they can learn from the normal children. It was difficult at first, but as time went on, the children adjusted and learned from one another. Through dancing, singing, drawing, reading and writing activities.

The most important part about being a nanny...

I take care of a 5 year old girl, named Leah, who had Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She often stays alone while playing. refused to share her stuff , also throwing tantrums during transition. leah could not do any of her daily activities herself like, toileting, dressing, eating etc. She loves anything red. One day two girls in her class wore pretty red dresses. She looked at them wherever they went and tried to do the things they did. One of the girls went into the bathroom, pulled her underwear down, then sat on the toilet. leah sat on the toilet and pee, on her clothes but that was okay. she smiled and clapped happily, her parents arrived to pick her up and saw, they were over excised, including myself and the other teachers.
