A little bit about me

Hi! My name is Alejandra and I am currently working at a preschool and am also an academic tutor at FAU.
I adore children and have been babysitting since I was 12 and have been working in professional childcare for 3 years. I am CPR and first aid certified and have an Early Child Care license. I am familiar with the Frog Street curriculum and would like to incorporate the learning and themes from the program to cater directly to your child! I also have experience teaching children as well as teens specifically in reading and writing. Most of my experience is ages 1-5. I believe in instilling independence and confidence in children and encourage creativity through crafts and exploration. I use positive discipline, praising helpful behavior and I avoid using the words "stop" or "don't." ("Don't do that" becomes "do this instead!") I strive to be a safe place for children and strongly believe in lettings kids be kids rather than solely preparing them for adulthood.

More About Me

Relevant experience where I also cared for children were...

I have worked as a daycare assistant for three years. The majority of those years were working with late 1 to early 3's. I have Pre-K experience as well.

Activities I enjoy doing with children...

I really believe in keeping kids stimulated through a variety of activities. As a nanny I'd love to have a "theme" each week. For example one week may be 'bugs' where the children learn about a new bug each day. Crafts may include making a Bee headband or a ladybug keychain. Activities may include a bug scavenger hunt or a puppet show! Outside play may include pretending to fly and crawl like different bugs or leaping from one leap pad to another like dragon flies! Gross motor skills can be addressed through creating a bug home out of blocks or clay pots!
I also encourage independent play and adore imaginary play with children!

The most important part about being a nanny...

In terms of discipline I do not excuse bad behavior but I take a holistic approach: "why did the child do this? Are they tired, overwhelmed, needing attention?" With every behavioral correction I offer an explanation, an alternative and a positive command "if you stand on the table you could fall and that would hurt! Let's put our feet on the floor. If you want to stand on something let's get your stool" versus "Don't stand on the table. get off!" My approach allows me to understand the child. Perhaps they are on the table because they are pretending to be a giant, or maybe they've been calling my name and are acting out for attention. My approach allows this understanding to occur.
Finally, I do not love screen time. Children have been playing for centuries without the stimulation of a screen! It also makes my job more difficult rather than easier as screens impair speech, connection and exploration.
Finally, it's important to me that children are allowed to be children!

The most important part about being a nanny...

My favorite moment happens every morning walking into a classroom! I am NOT a morning person but the way those kids light up as soon as the see me and run up to hug me fills me with so much energy and irreplicable joy.
Some highlight I compiled:
Watching a child say their first words to having a full conversation with them.
Hearing a child say my name for the first time or hearing a child singing my name. (Or when a parent told me that their child has been saying my name around the house...so sweet!)
Watching the way that kids play and how they create unique stories and different games. (My favorite one is 'Dinosaurs.' The kids stomp around the playground with a scowl on their face and ROOARRR! That's all it is but it's hilarious to watch!)
Stroking a child's hair while they fall asleep.
Making a child laugh.
One day during the heat of July my coworker and I turned off the lights and had a flashlight puppet show. I have never seen kids laugh so hard! I love that memory.
